Recruitment for Laboratory Technician, Engineering Maintenance Technician, Condition Monitoring Technician

Guinness Nigeria Plc is recruiting for the following positions:
POST TITLE:   Laboratory Technician

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Technologist 
CONTEXT/SCOPE: 
  • The Brewery operations are focused on our three sites, - Ogba, Benin and Aba. And all sites have quality functions within their structure.
DIMENSIONS:
a) Financial 
  • Reports to the budget holder for the quality function within each site as appropriate.
b) Market Complexity 
  • Work across our business with support from West Africa Hub and Brand Technical Centre in Dublin to deliver high quality product to our consumers.
c) Leadership Responsibilities 
  • Carry out designated analyses promptly and accurately in line with Guinness Nigeria PLC (GNPLC) work procedure and ensure results are well-documented on-line, notebooks and on-line Kalamazoo and results sent to user dept promptly.
 PURPOSE OF ROLE:
  • To ensure bench work quality control determination are carried out in accordance with GNPLC quality procedures and specifications for the attainment of high quality products.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Determination and reporting of analytical parameters, as appropriate and as specified. Working within guidelines to ensure that results are repeatable and aligned to other laboratories on an interchange basis,
  • Working with the appropriate parts of the supply function (as required) to assist them in delivering products of the highest quality in terms of content and presentation,
  • Acting as a member of the Quality team, and displaying the behaviours expected of a strong team player.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
  • OND or HND in physical, chemical or biological sciences,
  • On the job experience, having worked for minimum of 2 years in a laboratory environment,
  • Result oriented,
  • Very good communication skills,
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Barriers to Success in Role:
  • As the business will rely on the quality of the output from the individual to make business decisions around the quality of its components and products, lack of a very responsible attitude to work will be a hindrance to the individual,
  • Similarly, a low boredom threshold will be a problem.

  • The company is investing huge resources into: growing production and sales volumes, continuous improvement of their operations, training and development of their staff (CAP) and capital for the latest technology.
DIMENSIONS:
 a) Financial
  • Significant impact on raw material, component and utility costs and production, quality, rework and labour costs,
  • Key role in operating, cleaning and maintaining plant and equipment, impacts directly on plant availability, asset life cycle cost and asset life/replacement frequency.
 b) Market Complexity
  • The Nigerian beer market is complex with competitors and a strong quality, cost and delivery focus,
  • Need to constantly reduce production cost, while maintaining high quality and delivery to become Number 1.
 c) Leadership Responsibilities
  • Liaise with other Brewing, Packaging, Production Services and Maintenance Technicians, Laboratory Technicians, Contractors and Shift Managers to ensure continuity of reliable, quality production.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
  • To produce Guinness products at customer service levels, quality conformance and within budget, applying technical, process, continuous improvement to optimise overall brewery improvement and plant performance.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provide a comprehensive production service on plant and equipment to which they are primarily allocated: operating and cleaning, carrying out maintenance schedules, responding to breakdowns, assessing & monitoring plant performance on an ongoing basis and attending to all other process duties in a timely manner,
  • Deliver best possible plant operation by maximising plant availability and efficiency of operation through execution of Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules. Interface with SAP as appropriate,
  • Optimise product quality, through continuous observation and attention to detail, delivering RFT on quality and control parameters. Respond to non-conformances in a timely manner to keep process on track. Apply, record & share learning’s to prevent re-occurrence,
  • Manage and be accountable for materials, components and spares required by their plant and equipment – includes draw down stock from locally provided “bins”,
  • Compile and commentate whatever reports are required. These include status sheets, check sheets, condition monitoring sheets, etc.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
  • 2 years experience/competence in Operations, Maintenance, Process Control and Performance Measurement in a brewery or drinks or food manufacturing environment,
  • Ideally have an appropriate qualification in Brewing, Packaging, Engineering or Utilities (as appropriate) and/or a nationally recognised technical qualification,
  • Demonstrate understanding of teamwork principles, continuous improvement, preventative maintenance and problem solving.

  • Inadequate skill level  to successfully operate and maintain both new and ageing assets and technology,
  • Lack of personal flexibility to function in a tightly manned manufacturing environment with volatile production and sales demand.

REPORTS TO: Brewery Maintenance Planners 
CONTEXT/SCOPE:
  • Nigeria is currently the world's third largest market for the Guinness Brand,
  • The Condition Monitoring Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the condition monitoring program effectively predicts and prevent equipment failures.
DIMENSIONS:
a) Financial
  • Key role in predicting and developing corrective actions to prevent failures through condition monitoring and tracking,
  • This impacts directly on plant availability, asset life cycle cost and asset life/replacement frequency.  
b) Market Complexity
  • The Nigerian beer market is complex with many competitors and a strong quality, cost and delivery focus. 
c) Leadership Responsibilities
  • Effective liaison with other Brewing, Packaging, Production Services and Maintenance Technicians, Maintenance Engineers, Maintenance planners, Shift Managers and Contractors,  to ensure maximum plant availability and continuity of reliable, quality production.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
  • To apply technical, process, continuous improvement and individual/team development skills to optimise overall brewery improvement and plant performance through predictive and preventive maintenance.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provide a comprehensive production service on plant and equipment to which they are primarily allocated: assessing & monitoring plant performance on an ongoing basis and attending to all other process duties in a timely manner,
  • Adhere to GNPLC policy and procedures for safety, health, environment and hygiene to ensure a safe and efficient operating environment,
  • Deliver best possible plant operation by maximising plant availability and efficiency of operation through execution of Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules. Interface with CMMS as appropriate,
  • Implementation of condition monitoring tasks through work order process,
  • Develop condition monitoring, inspection and lubrication routes and manage through a condition-monitoring database,
  • Identification of corrective actions to prevent failures, managed through the maintenance forward planning business process,
  • Actively pursue training and development on an individual and team basis and participate in competency based training programs,
  • Compile and commentate whatever reports are required these include status sheets, meter reading trends, check sheets, condition monitoring sheets, Hit/Miss report e.t.c.,
  • Assist in the development of reliability based maintenance tasks based on a risk assessment of failures. (FastTracc RCM). 
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
  • 4 years experience/competence in Operations, Maintenance, Process Control and Performance Measurement in a brewery or drinks or food manufacturing environment,
  • Ideally have an appropriate qualification in Brewing, Packaging, Engineering or Utilities (as appropriate) and/or a nationally recognised technical qualification, preferably HND,
  • Demonstrate understanding of teamwork principles, continuous improvement, preventative maintenance and problem solving.
BARRIERS TO SUCCESS:

Barriers to Success in Role:
  • Inadequate skill level to successfully operate and maintain both new and ageing assets and technology,
  • Lack of personal flexibility to function in a tightly manned manufacturing environment with volatile production and sales demand,
  • Poor inclination to pursue training and development on an individual and team basis or to share and apply new skills acquired.
